History of Escavalon

In the aftermath of the end of times, all of the continents had been smashed and re-formed, a new land arose as a mountainous range was forced up from the seabed, for many of the following years this land was still mostly under the ocean until the waters receded to reveal what is now the largest land mass on Acrana. The mountain ranges that first appeared bisect the land almost in two apart from the coastal plains and these mountains capped in ice provide a huge catchment for rain and mighty rivers flow out of the mountains feeding the fertile land. Clouds heavy with rain cannot climb over these high peaks and deposit their life giving waters back on the lands below.
In the north is the kingdom of Escavalon a rich farm based land of many lakes and rivers, near the coastal plains where the land is the flattest marshland stretches for many days walk in any direction. The seasons are very defined though whilst the winters can be harsh they are short and equally the summers might experience drought like conditions but never more than a few weeks at a time, followed by a time of flooding.
Quickly after the land returned the barbarian tribes soon settled to a more peaceful farming existence the wild herds were domesticated and crops filled the land from horizon to horizon and large tribes could easily be supported. The horse the animal essential to a nomadic life became the beast of burden pulling the plough.
However the warriors who were used to being elite now found their place at the top of the tribe under threat by successful herdsmen or farmers and soon many were pushed out of the their traditional roles, this quickly lead to banditry and soon warbands were roaming around attacking, raping and pillaging across the land non farming races like Orc’s joined in and a second age of pain begun destroying the many years of peace. Whilst wars made the warriors whole and in charge again, it so did not feed them, as a whole seasons crops was lost and the winter came with a harshness that some scholars have said only God would sent to punish them, starvation became a reality for many. Order needed to restored and the time of the overlords had come, a chief or mighty warrior would gather enough fighters to them to pacify a territory and then bring in workers to work the fields at first they were a combination of the poor and slaves, shown these would become a semi skilled warrior and a source of cheap soldiers in time of greater war. They owed the overlord for the land they worked and protection and soon food was again available but the need to use trained warriors never stopped and in a land of too many overlords bitter conflict was the only constant. It was therefore decided more order was needed and the overlords formed a ruling council and each year a new lord almighty was appointed the more pious did not like the title so the term King was used instead.
Having a ruling council is one thing getting it to work is another with so many pretty realms all run by lords eager for advancement a new power game began, if you were not large enough to hold your own you quickly got absorbed by your rivals with your kin suffering horrible endings. Allegiances needed to be forged and select marriages are used to cement deals. We now have a varied mixture of all races tied together in a collection of complex transactions.
Raiding each other is now big business and skilful warriors are extremely valuable. With many a defeated veteran spared death to help a young noble learn the art of raiding.
When a system finds favour it will quickly spreads and from one kingdom Escavalon now has nine kingdoms each a potent mix of overlords, the nine kings sit on the kings council and vote in an over-king each year every race is represented though there are many trivial vendettas.
